What Is Post-Concussion Syndrome?
Mild traumatic brain injuries categorized as a concussion can occur due to a variety types of accidents, including car accident, slip and fall, or workplace accident. Most often, concussion symptoms are temporary in nature – they last for the short-term. However, in some cases a concussion develops into a condition known as post-concussion syndrome. The symptoms of post-concussion syndrome can significantly inhibit the ability of the victim to perform his or her daily activities, workplace duties, care for children, per to Spain in hobbies, and enjoy life in general.
A concussion is a type of brain injury resulting from the brain impacting the interior of the skull or sustaining an injury in some other way. When the head is struck violently or impacts a surface violently, such as during a car accident, a concussion may result. Concussions may also result from sports injuries or physical abuse. The symptoms of a concussion such as headache, confusion, nausea may not always appear immediately, but may take days or weeks to manifest. For this reason, it is vital for anyone involved in a car crash or other serious accident to get checked by a doctor as soon as possible.
Most of the time, victims of mild traumatic brain injury (or concussion) recover fully within just a few months of sustaining the initial injury. Many times the symptoms clear up in about 30 days. However some victims experience symptoms that last more than six months. If the symptoms of concussion extend longer than three months, it may be classified as post-concussion syndrome.
What are the symptoms of post-concussion syndrome?
Some of the symptoms of post-concussion syndrome include dizziness, memory problems, reduced concentration, headache, sensitivity to light and noise, problems sleeping, blurred vision, irritability, ringing in the ears, anxiety, and depression. One or more of these symptoms can significantly affect the quality of the victim’s life and the life of his or her loved ones. Anyone sustaining a concussion or post-concussion syndrome injury due to the negligence of another party may qualify to receive financial compensation.
Post-concussion syndrome risk factors
Although the reason why post-concussion syndrome only incurs in some mild traumatic brain injury victims is not completely known, there are some common traits and risk factors neurologists have identified. These include:
- History of neurological issues or migraines
- Previously sustained an initial head injury of greater severity
- Sustained past head injuries
- Pre-existing psychological issues
- Older adult and female
The main difference between a concussion and post-concussion syndrome is the length of time the symptoms last. Either condition has the potential to cause significant physical, financial, and mental/emotional hardships. However, if the symptoms persist as they do with post-concussion syndrome, the toll on the victim’s health and quality of life is multiplied.
